Psalm 13:2, “How long
shall I take counsel in my soul, having
sorrow in my heart daily? how long
shall mine enemy be exalted over me?.”
King David was oppressed in his soul. Everything in his life was wrong at
this point. David had committed adultery with Bath-Sheba. An unplanned
pregnancy resulted. To cover his sins, David murdered Uriah, her husband.
Several months had passed. At the time the child was due, Nathan the prophet
confronted David about the matter, and David immediately repented (2nd
Samuel 12:13).
Ponder the following Scriptures, that only one who has experienced such woeful pain of soul can truly comprehend these words...
Psalm 13:1, “How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?”
Psalm 13:2, “How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?”
Psalm 13:3, “Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death.”
Psalm 13:4, “Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him; and those that trouble me rejoice when I am moved.”
Psalm 13:5, “But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation.”
Psalm 13:6, “I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.”
King David said that he experienced SORROW IN HIS HEART DAILY. David's enemies had a heyday—assassinating his reputation, spreading the sins he had committed as far as news could possibly travel, rejoice to see him suffering, exalting themselves over David (being the self-righteous hypocrites they were).
Notice that David still rejoiced in his heart in THY SALVATION. David trusted upon the Lord, i.e., HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS!!! David rejoiced in God's salvation; which is the only true salvation (Romans 10:3-4). David still sang a song in his heart to the Lord. David was still thankful to God for His blessings upon him.
We learn a wonderful truth here from king David—when we experience times of inexpressible emotional pain in our soul on a daily basis, hurtful pain that seems that it will never depart from us; we ought to still rejoice that our name is written in Heaven, and sing a song unto the Lord our God in thankfulness. Whether you caused the pain, or someone else has caused the pain (or both); rejoice in HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS (Matthew 6:33; Romans 4:5-6; 2nd Corinthians 5:21).
